A doctor leading an upcoming obesity summit says Canadians living in rural areas are at greater risk of developing obesity than their urban neighbours. Dr. Arya Sharma of the Canadian Obesity Network says city dwellers typically burn more calories in a day than rural residents. He says that's partly because rural residents are more dependent on their vehicles. Sharma says many people think that rural residents go for walks and bike rides in the countryside - but he says the fact is very few people do that. He also points to busier work schedules and rising stress levels, which induce sugar cravings.
